Integrating the Practice of Journaling into Your Life

Happy Friday Followers!

I've written on this topic before but not in terms of integrating Shadow Work.

I'm almost at the end of my Udemy Shadow work  course with Elaina Bianca and today I'm going to look at how she uses the Practice of Journaling  as a Shadow Work Practice into Your Life.

This journaling process may be different than the ones you've heard of or tried before but it's nothing scary and offers so many healing benefits.

This breaks down your healing work into 7 different categories. These practical applications align with the seven chakras which are the main energy centers of your BODY and their corresponding THEMES.

These categories are:

  1. Security, Family, and Ancestral Roots(Root Chakra)
  2. Sexuality, Creativity, and Passion(Sacral Chakra)
  3. Ambition, Authority, and Power(Solar Plexus Chakra)
  4. Love and Relationships(Heart Chakra)
  5. Self-Expression and Communication(Throat Chakra)
  6. Intelligence, Imagination, and Intuition(Third-Eye Chakra)
  7. Connection to the Divine(Crown Chakra)
Ask yourself what experiences in my life have a NEGATIVE IMPACT on my sense of ____________? Fill in the blank with the category words you are "working on". Feel free to break down the question to something more "manageable". For ex: Instead of focusing on ambition, authority and power all at one time, "Ask yourself what experiences in my life have a NEGATIVE IMPACT on my sense of ambition? "Then write your answer however you feel called to. You might want to jot down notes or write down "short sentences", or even retell the story of your experience. The purpose of journaling in this way is to reflect on your past and identify moments in time that led to developments of your shadow. Repeating this process for all 7 categories ensures that you are completing a "thorough" investigation of your shadow thus leaving no "stone unturned".

In my own case, at one time, my sacral chakra was blocked. So, I will use my own personal life as an example to look at #2. Ask yourself what experiences in my life have a NEGATIVE IMPACT on my sense of sexuality?

  • I was molested at a young age by a neighbor.
  • I was molested again by the same neighbor as a teenager.
  • I developed an eating disorder(anorexia) to control my emotional, physical, and sexual pain.
  • I grew up in a very violent household where my mother was abused. This affected my idea of role-modeling of a woman, submissiveness, sex as punishment or sex confused with love.
  • I didn't want to even be a female for a long time.
  • I already had issues with feeling unlovable, disposable, manipulated, and abandoned.
  • After much trauma work, I know what's true, mine, what's a predator's, what I didn't cause, and that I am a sexual being who is worthy of love, respect, and a healthy intimate relationship.

Rate your STRESS LEVEL upon completing each of these experiences! Do this 1 week after you finish your evaluation. This will help you rate your expansion or contraction of your "SHADOW". You may benefit from repeating the exercise. If you feel as though something was not said, you can always reach out to a mental health professional to discuss these topics in more depth and also receive SUPPORT.

Health outcomes related to expressive writing are:
  • Reduced blood pressure
  • Reduced feelings of depression
  • Improved immune function
  • Improved mood memory and performance
  • Fewer stress-related doctor visits
  • Bedtime Journalers experience the benefit of falling asleep easier.
  • Reduced cognitive stimulus, rumination, and worry
