What are the Benefits of Humming?

 Good afternoon, Followers,

As an insatiable learner, this question had me searching!

I'm taking a class on "Advanced - Self Care and Healing " from Tasha Ina Church through Transformation Academy.

The reason this particular topic caught my attention was:

Humming clears the "freeze response " that we often experience when our nervous system feels threatened because of either a stressor or trauma. As a person that had experienced CPTD (COMPLEX POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS SYNDROME), I recognized this right away as a beneficial "tool". How this works is: the body and mind are quick at bringing themselves back into balance. Vibrations from "humming" stimulate your "vagus nerve", which is responsible for calming down your "nervous system". This can help return your body to states other that "freeze"- a more relaxed state where anxiety and panic can't survive. Humming reduces "muscle tension" and also reduces slower regulated breathing (which calms the nervous system too). Using this too, you can softly and gently direct yourself towards "calm" and "balance".

Let's Look at the Vagus Nerve:

This is a major component of the parasympathetic nervous system whose job is to calm the body and promote relaxation. When you hum, the vibrations in your voice, activate this Vagus Nerve, telling your brain that "it's okay for you to relax now". This will allow you to transition out of freeze mode of responding and move into a more relaxed condition.

What's Regulating Breathing All About?

This looks like taking slower deeper breaths. Humming naturally regulates your breathing, thus encouraging you to do this. This kind of regulated breathing relieves "stress" and "anxiety" both of which are frequently related to the "Freeze Response". As your breathing slows, your "heart rate stabilizes" which also "soothes your nervous system".

How to Relieve Muscle Tension:

Take 10 to 15 minutes to write about this overall experience. Then take a break. Read over what you have written. search for repeating words, phrases, or themes that stand out to you. These could very well be your primary issues, desires, or feelings that want "acknowledgement".

Finally... What does Mindful Presence Mean?

Physical tension builds up in the body during a "frozen response". "Humming vibrations" can help alleviate them. Often these stiff muscle areas are found in the neck, chest, and diaphragm. Once relieved, energy is more easily able to circulate throughout the body.

The next time I hum a tune, I will understand why I feel lighter, more joyful, less anxious, more present, and overall, healthier.

I hope you enjoyed learning more about humming!

Try it today... share with me how you felt and what tune you hummed!

Peace, Love, and Gratitude,

Laura
