So How About Affirmations and Incantations?
Good morning followers,
This type of practice has revolutionized my life and changed my perspective!
I'm continuing the "Emotional Intelligence Life Coach Certification" through "Transformation Academy" with Joeel and Natalie Rivera.
Today's topic is presented by Joeel Rivera.
So, what are affirmations?
"Affirmations, also referred to as positive affirmations, are phrases that, when repeated regularly, can change negative thoughts and behavior patterns, per the Cleveland Clinic. They can be said aloud or to yourself. These statements are usually intended to help shift thinking from negative to positive, motivate an action, reduce stress, persevere through difficult times, and increase self-confidence and well-being."

The idea presented by Joeel Rivera in this part of the course is replacing a "negative belief" with a more empowering one". By repeating this empowering thought regularly, especially when the negative belief is triggered AND also at pre-determined times of the day, you practice this NEW BELIEF, thus helping it become "ingrained" into your implicit, automatic, memory. Over the course of time, this "thought" becomes "habituated" and you "BELIEVE" it.
Joeel Rivera explains by focusing on the "affirmative statement", you direct your "FOCUS" toward what you "WANT". This in turn triggers your "RETICULAR ACTIVATION SYSTEM (RAS), which is a small section of your brain that tunes in to your "awareness" to stimulus in your environment that matches what you're focusing on. In any given moment, you are exposed to a million bits of information and are on consciously aware of 2,000 of them!!! If you happen to be thinking negatively, you notice "negative things". If you notice "red cars" for example, you're going to see red cars everywhere. If you're thinking about how to get new contracts for your photography business, you just started, your ears will be attuned to the conversation in the adjacent aisle in the store where someone is discussion their upcoming wedding.
Joeel Rivera gives 4 Keys to Successful Affirmation Statements:
1. They must be believable and within your control
2. They must be "present tense" (happening now), personal (I), positive (no "not" or "don't)
3. You must FEEL them
4. You must repeat them REGULARLY (3-5 times per day for 21-30 days)
Then Joeel puts this into practice; ie; replacing the negative belief with an empowering affirmative one giving you this guideline:
- What is a belief you hold or a negative thought that you regularly say to yourself that you would like to REPLACE with a more "EMPOWERING, POSITIVE AFFIRMATIVE STATEMENT?
- Write a NEW phrase to replace the OLD one, using the guidelines. Repeat this affirmative statement at least 3 times a day (5 to 10 times each session). Consider posting it on your mirror, nightstand, refrigerator, computer, or somewhere you will regularly "SEE IT". Do this with additional beliefs/thoughts.

Finally, Joeel Rivera looks at applying the practice of "Incantations".
The applications of Incantations with "affirmations" puts them into "motion". Thus your "brain" becomes engaged, and it becomes more "real".
Incantations are spoken "OUTLOUD". This allows our brain to not only hear them but to take them "Seriously". If you have to do incantations when others are around, and you don't wish to draw attention to yourself, you may do it "silently", however, whenever you can, say them out loud.
Incantations can be an entire phrase like an affirmation, or they can be a simple phrase such as "I am confident".
This is a great illustration of using Incantations with Affirmations from the spencerinstitute.com
https://spencerinstitute.com/do-positive-affirmations-and-incantations-actually-work/
So, what affirmation you like to use as an incantation? Or, if you prefer, write a brand new one!
What movement could you make while reciting this incantation? (Examples: Raise your hands in the air like you're cheering, pull your elbow in as if you're saying "YES", jump up and down or my personal favorite .... DANCE!!!!).
Next, pick a certain time that you will practice your Incantation EVERY DAY. Be specific so that it becomes easy to "habituate." For ex: You can do it right after you brush your teeth.

While writing this blog, my dog Lulu, was barking as I am having work done on my crawlspace. It proved that I could get out of a negative, fear-based mind, and focus on the affirmation, " I can push through and still allow noise in the background."
I'd love to hear from you!
Peace, Gratitude, and Compassion,
Laura
